Creating an Overlap
Creating an Overlap is a Pass & Move Drill that increase in speed and intensity as it progresses. Both wings are in play, with a slight delay in start time to maximise time in play.
It requires firm accurate passing, sharp movements, good body shape and a willingness to use both feet to keep the drill flowing at a good pace.
Each player should be looking to take a MAXIMUM of two touches, one for control, the next for the pass. Anymore than that will indicate that there are not really switched on and ready to receive.
Creating an Overlap – How it works
Player 1 ( Red ) Passes to Player 2 ( Blue ) and the follows the ball.
Player 2 controls with their back foot, opens up play and passes down the line to Player 3 ( Green ). Player 2 then follows the pass and continues to the line.
Player 3 plays a first time pass to Player 4 ( Yellow ) and then makes a run around the back of Player 4 and into the box.
Player 4 plays another first time pass into the pass of the Overlapping Player 2.
Player 2 looks up to see where Player 3’s run has taken them and puts in a first time cross for them to finish.
Where they end up
Player 1 ends up at Player 2 position.
Player 2 ends up at Player 4 position
Player 4 ends up at Player 3 position
Player 3 goes to the back of the queue ( on the opposite side if you are working both wings )
The full drill is in the videos below with animation and the actual drill being performed.
Creating an Overlap – Coaching Points
For this one to be a real success you want intensity in all of the moves.
Fast, sharp, accurate passing.
Sprints between the sections,
Communication
When players are crossing, especially on their weaker foot, encourage them to attempt the cross first time. The more they practise, the more natural it will become.
