Shooting Drill – Playing in 3rd man runner

Shooting Drill – Playing in 3rd man runner is a really fast paced rotational shooting drill that requires three first time passes to be played in order to play in the 3rd man runner.

It all about the quality of the passes for this one to work well, so players need to be engaged and focused. They need to know where their next pass is going before the ball arrives so they have a good body position in order to be able to play the pass well.

Shooting Drill – Playing in 3rd man runner – How it works

3 simple passes and 3 changes of position make this work, its not a straight forward pass and follow however.

Passing movements

Player in position 1 passes to player in position 3.

Player in position 3 passes to player in position 2. As soon as this pass is made Player in position 4 makes their move.

Player in position 2 then plays a through ball in between the markers to the runner who has 2 touches to finish.

Player movements

Player in position 1 moves to position 2.

Player in position 2 moves to position 3.

Player in position 3 moves to position 4.

Player having the shot retrieves the ball and comes round the back and joins the queue at position 1.

The movement between the cones has to be quick, if a player moves slowly and isn’t ready for the next pass it can all fall apart quite quickly.

Encourage players to play the passes first time, but build up to it. Allow 2 touches to start with until the get the feel of the drill and whats required of them.
