Small Sided Game: Connect Four

Small Sided Game: Connect Four is a brilliant game to get your players looking for space.

Aim of the game is for a team to score in all 4 coloured coned boxes to win the game.

This can be either them must score in all 4 to win OR score in all 4 without the opposition scoring one back ( so owning all 4 goals )

They can score in any order

The game starts off as 3 touch and progresses into “All In” after a couple of games.

Starting off as 3 touch encourages players to move more to bring support. If you want to test further, put a knee height rule in place.

The idea is to get your players playing slick give and go passes to progress around the pitch, moving the opposition as much as possible to create space in the areas they want to attack in.

Small Sided Game: Connect Four – How it works

Mark out a pitch as above, but instead of goals, put 4 different coloured coned boxes around the pitch.

Place spare footballs in each corner.

Every time the ball goes out of play, its starts with a kick in from the nearest corner. Opposition players must be a minimum of 5 yards away.

The game starts with players from both teams spread out around the pitch and a drop ball in the middle to get things going.

Small Sided Game: Connect Four – What to expect

The first few times you play this game it will be a bit chaotic, with players racing toward the nearest goal and not thinking about a plan or adapting to what the opposition have done.

As they develop there understanding they will adapt quicker to where the opposition has scored and protect those areas, particularly in the latter parts.

Patterns of play will develop. Communication will improve, Scanning and reacting to space will also improve.

Players will always look for a “Cheat Code” mainly goal hanging or a defending staying in the box.

Eliminate that by putting a 5 second rule in place. If breached opposite team get a free pass into that goal from the centre spot.

Small Sided Game: Connect Four – Coaching Points & Scale Ups

Talk to the players beforehand and tell them about the importance of communication and getting their heads up to see whats going on.

The 3 touch rule at the start will force them to move the ball more quickly and be more aware of what is going on around them.

To scale it up enforce a knee high rule on passing.

Add an area around the goals that players can only enter for 5 seconds at a time.
