Summary
This possession-based football drill is designed to improve your team’s ability to recognise and exploit spaces between opposition lines. Players will learn how to break through midfield and defensive units using intelligent movement, sharp passing combinations, and quality decision making.
The practice encourages players to scan before receiving, play forward at the right moment, and support the ball with clever angles and movement. It is ideal for developing midfielders, attacking players, and teams looking to dominate possession while progressing the ball effectively through the thirds.
This drill works brilliantly for teams wanting to improve:
- Breaking opposition pressure
- Playing forward quickly
- Midfield combination play
- Movement between the lines
- Receiving on the half turn
- Creating attacking overloads
Setup
- Area size: 40×30 yards
- Players: 10–14 players
- Equipment:
- Footballs
- Cones
- Bibs
- Mini goals (optional)
Split the pitch into three horizontal zones:
- Build-up zone
- Midfield zone
- Attacking zone
The defending team sets up in organised lines across the middle and upper zones, attempting to block passing lanes and prevent forward progression.
The attacking team starts in the build-up area and must work the ball through each line to reach the attacking zone under control.
How The Drill Works
The attacking side begins with possession in the deepest zone. Their objective is to play through the midfield line and then the defensive line using accurate passing, movement, and timing.
Players should constantly look to receive in pockets of space between defenders and open their body shape to play forward quickly. Midfielders must scan regularly and identify opportunities to split the opposition with vertical passes.
Once the ball is played successfully into the next zone, the attacking team continues building towards the final area. The focus should remain on:
- Quick circulation
- Patience in possession
- Finding the correct moment to penetrate
Defenders attempt to intercept passes, press aggressively, and force play backwards or wide. If the defenders regain possession, they can counter by passing into target players or mini goals to simulate transition moments.
The practice naturally creates realistic game scenarios where players must decide whether to:
- Play through
- Play around
- Recycle possession
Coaching Points
Scan Before Receiving
Encourage players to check shoulders early and constantly assess space before the ball arrives.
Play Forward Quickly
When the opportunity appears, players should be positive and commit to forward passes through the lines.
Body Shape
Receiving side-on allows players to play forward faster and maintain the tempo of the attack.
Movement Between Lines
Attackers should avoid standing in straight lines and instead drift into pockets of space to create passing lanes.
Weight & Timing Of Pass
Passes through the lines must be firm enough to beat pressure but controlled enough for teammates to receive cleanly.
Patience In Possession
Players must understand when to recycle the ball and wait for the right moment to penetrate.
Progressions / Scale Ups
1. Touch Limit
Limit attacking players to 2 touches to increase speed of play and decision making.
2. Add Neutral Players
Introduce neutral midfielders who always play with the team in possession to create overloads.
3. Directional Transition
If defenders win possession, they immediately counter towards mini goals within 5 seconds.
4. Tighten The Space
Reduce the pitch size to increase pressure and improve quick combinations under stress.
5. Mandatory Split Pass
Award bonus points for passes that split two defenders directly through the line.
Why This Drill Is Effective
This is an excellent modern possession drill because it recreates realistic midfield situations players experience during matches. Teams that can consistently play through opposition lines are far harder to defend against and can progress the ball into dangerous areas quickly.
The drill develops both technical quality and tactical understanding while demanding constant communication, movement, and awareness from every player involved.
It is particularly effective for:
- Possession-based teams
- Midfield development
- Building attacks through thirds
- Teaching positional play principles
- Improving composure under pressure
