Passing Drill: The Big Switch
This Passing Drill: The Big Switch is an attacking football drill focuses on switching the play quickly to exploit space on the weak side of the pitch. The aim is to encourage players to recognise when one side of the pitch has become overloaded before using a quick cross-field pass to attack the opposite flank.
The drill teaches players how to stretch the opposition, maintain width and create crossing or finishing opportunities by changing the angle of attack at speed. It is ideal for developing game intelligence, movement off the ball and long-range passing quality.
Passing Drill: The Big Switch – How It Works
The attacking team begins by working the ball down one side of the pitch, encouraging the defending players to shuffle across and compact the area around the ball.
Once the defence has shifted over, the ball is played backwards to the supporting full back or deeper midfielder. This player must recognise the opportunity quickly and deliver a long diagonal pass into the space on the opposite wing.
The opposite winger then attacks the space aggressively, looking to drive into the box, deliver a cross or create a finishing opportunity. The sequence can then be repeated in the opposite direction to encourage constant switching and movement.
