6 Week Training Plan – Through the Gates

This passing drill can be used for any age group and scaled up or down accordingly.

Make a square in the goal mouth with your Flat Circles / Discs.

This is the Control Box, size determined by the level of players you have.

Now about 20 – 25 yards out set up 6 gates with different coloured Cones

Yellow ConesJust off CentreWidest GateValue: 1 Point
Blue ConesMiddle GateHalf size of Yellow GateValue: 3 Points
Red ConesOut WideHalf size of Blue GateValue: 5 Points

The reason the widest gates are the smallest and most value, is because you want to encourage the players to pass the ball out wide, rather than just kicking down the middle.

Split players into 2 teams

Coach passes the ball from the halfway line along the floor to the player

Player must control the ball and keep it within the Control Box. If the ball comes out of the Control Box then no pass can be played and 0 points scored.

Player has 3 seconds to play a pass through gates of their choice.

Each player gets 2 turns.

Levelling Up

To increase the pressure on the player controlling and passing, and opposing team player stands with the coach. 2 or 3 seconds after the coach passes, the player sprints to close down the player passing and put pressure on them to misplace their pass.

Another way to level up is to change the pass type to the player. Add in a bouncer etc.

6 Week Training Plan – Linking Play

Linking Play is such a great thing to teach your players and this is a great drill for all age groups.

There are 2 defenders in play, 1 Centre Forward and 1 Winger.

6 Week Training Plan - Playing out from the Back

The idea is the Centre Forward drops into a deep position and links the play by receiving a pass, taking one touch to control, laying the ball off to a winger and spinning in behind to attack the box with a far post run so their body is open and ready to get on the end of the cross and finish.

Defender 1 starts in a Static Position 10 yards in front of the coach, who is on the half way line.

The Centre forward is 10 yards further back, then runs infront of the defender, calling for the ball.

The Coach plays the pass to his feet, he has one touch and lays the ball out to the winger, then spins back on himself in an arcing run to attack the box from a far post position.

The Defender also spins to try and track his run.

The winger collects the pass and carries down the line.

The winger has 2 opportunities to cross, one being early, before reaching the penalty area, the second being from the by line.

Defender 2 moves from the centre of the box to force the winger to make a decision

Communication and speed of run from the attacker will determine which decision the winger makes.

Why it works

Encouraging a centre forward to make an unselfish run and Linking play and how that can create a goal scoring opportunity.

By encouraging the centre forward to attack the far post, their body position is open and ready for a finish.

6 Week Training Plan – Pass Follow, 1-2 & Finish

Pass Follow, 1-2 & Finish is a fluent drill that will keep the whole team engaged, moving and on their toes.

The quality of the passes is key in this one, both in the long pass and the 1-2.

6 Week Training Plan - Playing out from the Back

Ensure that the players keep their eyes on the ball to enable the drill to flow.

The Focus is a strong first pass, followed by a quick 1-2 around the pole or cone.

Then as the 2nd player repeats the action, the first player spins and is ready to receive.

Repeat this for the 4 Poles / cones.

On the last Pole / Cone, the player should be having a first time shot, before collecting the ball and returning to the back of the queue.

Pass Follow, 1-2 & Finish – Scale it Up

Theres numerous ways this can be changed.

The distance between the Poles / Cones can be altered each way.

Further distance increases the need for an accurate Pass.

Shorter distance intensifies the pace.

Switching the cones round so the players are using their left foot for the passes and finish.

6 Week Training Plan – Playing out from the Back – Playing through the Gate

This one takes a little more confidence from the defender playing the ball.

Confidence to choose a pass before they receive the ball and stick with it.

Instead of looking to play to a players feet, they are playing through the gates. Gates being the gaps between the opposition players.

This will allow the wingers or forwards to run on to the through ball and build play in the oppositions half.
