Passing Drill – Pass & Follow

Passing Drill – Pass & Follow is a cracking drill to get your session started. Easy to set up. Can split into 3 players so no waiting around. Fast paced and focuses on core elements such as Pass Quality, Control, Touch, Body Shape & Movement.

All of the above are simple techniques, but when done with a bit of pace can really start to test players and that’s when the concentration kicks in. When the drills is flowing it looks fantastic.

It can look a little complicated at first, but when broken down into the Phases shown above and detailed below it is quite simple and certainly enjoyable.

Passing Drill – Pass & Follow: How it Works

Phase 1

Player 1 plays a straight pass into the feet of Player 2. Player 1 then runs to the first cone on the left. Player 2 is allowed 2 touches. 1 to control 1 to pass the ball on to on rushing Player 1 between the 2 left cones.

Phase 2

Once Player 2 has laid the ball off, they will back pedal behind the cone. Player 1 will play a first time pass to Player 2’s new position. Player 2 will then also play a first time pass straight back to Player 1.

Phase 3

Player 2 will the return to their original position, Player 1 will play another first time pass back to Player 2. Player 2 will then play a long pass to Player 3 waiting at the start and follow the ball back to that position. Player 1 will move to Player 2’s original Start position ready to recycle the drill again with Player 3.

Passing Drill – Pass & Follow: Scale it Up

This can go either way. Either increase the distance of the first pass to make sure it has to be more accurate and a faster following run is needed. Or decrease the gap so the overall tempo is so much faster.

You could also remove the 2 touch option in phase 1 and drop it to 1 touch. This will really work Players 2’s body shape and positioning.

Once the have the hang of the drill you can put the teams into competition with each other. Last to complete 3, 5, 10 rotations without making a mistake does 10 pressups etc. Amazing what a bit of pressure can do and really helps the focus..even at a young age.

Passing Drill – Pass & Follow: What to Expect

It is a fairly straightforward drill, so it really should only take 5 minutes for the players to get what is happening. There maybe a few loose passes and control at first, but once they get into a flow they will be fine and start enjoying it.
