One-Two Cross & Finish

One-Two Cross & Finish is a great drill for both defending and attacking.

From an attacking point of view, it focuses on a quick exchange of passes before playing a pass outside to an on running winger.

The winger will then deliver a cross into the box for the 3 other attacking players to challenge for and try and score.

From a defensive point of view, the defenders need to react to which wing the ball is played out too and set themselves up accordingly.

They need to hold a good line that enables them to either block the cross or force it too close to the keeper.

They also need to deal with the overload

From a Keepers point of view, this is a really good drill.

They will have to look to come off their line and collect crosses, they will have to adjust their position constantly to be ready for any shot / attempt on goal that may come.

It will really help their footwork speed and it will test their confidence to come off their line.

One-Two Cross & Finish – How it works

Firstly, get your goalkeeper and defenders in position.

If the cross comes in behind the first defender, encourage the goalkeeper to come and collect.

Secondly. Place 2 wingers on each side. It doesn’t matter if they are left or right footed, this drill is designed to work on the weaker foot and encourage its use.

Line the rest of the players up in pairs in the centre.

Players 1 on the left of centre, Player 2’s on the right.

Each time the drill starts the opposite player will start the drill.

Player 1 passes to Player 2, who completes the 1-2 by returning the pass to Player 1.

Player 1 then plays the pass out wide to the right wing, the both players and the left winger will attack the box.

The Right winger is allowed 1 touch to control, and then must put their cross in.

One-Two Cross & Finish – Scoring Points

Attackers: Score a goal1 point
Defenders: Block the cross or shot1 point
Keeper: Collects the cross or makes a Save1 Point

What to Expect

Expect a lot of the early crosses to fail, to be misplaced or easily dealt with, especially when it’s played with their weaker foot. Expect the keeper to stay on their line more often than not at the start.

Encourage both to stick with it and the improvements will be seen quickly.

Encourage forwards to communicate with each other about who is running where, which post they are attacking, who is holding back etc.

Encourage Keeper and defender to talk. To call or claim the ball as it is coming in.

This drill will help confidence improve on all those aspects.
